Hospital Wind National AED Grant for
Claiborne High |
|
March, 2007
Nearly a year ago, the Claiborne County Hospital Sports Medicine Program
submitted a grant to place a LifePak CR Plus AED inside the Claiborne High
School gymnasium. Recently, Claiborne County Hospital was notified that
Claiborne High School was chosen to receive a free automated external
defibrillator (AED). An AED is a small, portable electronic device that can
provide a defibrillation shock to a heart in sudden cardiac arrest. Using
pads applied to the chest, the AED analyzes the heart’s rhythm and is
designed to deliver a shock only if the heart needs it.
Keep the Beat and the Neighborhood Heart Watch Foundation received over 200
applications from institutions all across the country including large
universities such a Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN), Emmanuel
University (Boston, MA), and Chowan University (Murfreesboro, NC). During
the nationwide competition, Claiborne High School was able to pull ahead of
the pack and secure a spot to receive the grant. Only 10 institutions were
chosen to receive the AED grant and Claiborne High School was the only
recipient in the southeast.
This potentially lifesaving program will be implemented immediately at
Claiborne High School to serve citizens and visitors who frequent the school
premises for education, sports, and community activities of all kinds. The
CCH Sports Medicine Program and Claiborne High School would like to thank
everyone involved with the Keep the Beat AED Grant and ask for their support
with future endeavors. |
