Baker Cancer Treatment Center Gets Financial Boost

    The Baker Cancer Treatment Center in Harrogate is a joint partnership between Claiborne County Hospital and Baptist Health Systems of East Tennessee.

    The Baker Center has served hundreds of patients over the past several years and continues to be a needed option for the residents of our community and surrounding areas.  There are people in our community who cannot survive the daily drive to Knoxville for radiation treatments, and before the center opened in Harrogate, many cancer patients wet without treatment.

    The Baker Center recently went through a $500,000 plus upgrade in equipment which will increase treatment capabilities and serve more patients.  Since reopening, the cancer center is treating as many as 20 patients a per day, further demonstrating the need for this service.  This upgrade was accomplished with community support through the annual Claiborne County Healthcare Foundation golf tournament and through employee, volunteer, and visitor support of The Gift Basket (the hospital gift shop).  The Foundation committed $75,000 toward the project which comes entirely form contributions through fundraising and through the gift shop.  The Gift Basket is operated by volunteers and all of the proceeds go to further healthcare in our community and organization.  Thanks to the volunteers, employees, and visitors for making this such a success.  Thanks to the hospital and Foundation boards and the physicians for the vision of improved health for our community.

    In addition, England, Inc. and the Lazy-Boy Foundation made a contribution of $10,000 to this worthy cause.  A special thank you goes out to Rodney England and the England employees for their support of healthcare in our community.

    England and Lazy-Boy were also significant contributors when the Baker Center was built.  And last, but not least, suit settlement funds distributed by Circuit Court Judge John McAfee's office resulted in a $250,000 distribution to benefit the Baker Cancer Center which treats many patients in the community and region.

    Claiborne County Healthcare Foundation, Claiborne County Hospital, and Baptist Health Systems want to thank Judge McAfee, England, Inc., and the many businesses and individuals who have donated to such a worthy cause.
