Claiborne County Hospital Stages Disaster Planning Exercise
On
1-29-08, Claiborne County Hospital and Nursing Home staff held a disaster
drill exercise at the hospital. Law enforcement, 911, EMS, and EMA personnel
also participated in the event, which simulated what would occur if a large
ice storm hit Claiborne County. In this practice scenario, a large ice storm
had hit Claiborne County, leaving up to four inches of ice covering the
roads, and residents had no electricity or phone service. Those
participating had to explain what their responsibilities would be in this
situation, and answer questions concerning how they would react to a variety
of possible events and patient situations.
Disaster planning exercises such
as this one allows the hospital staff and local partners to evaluate current
response plans, policies, and capabilities for the prevention and/or
mitigation of the possible issues from a severe weather-related event. It
allows practice in problem solving and team building, and helps facilities
become aware of the weaknesses and strengths in emergency operation plans
while providing an opportunity to take corrective actions. Claiborne County
Hospital thanks our local law enforcement, 911, EMS, EMA, and municipal
staff for their participation in this exercise.
