Professor
Speaks at Hospital
July 12, 2007
Dr. Greg Thompson, Chair of the
Department of Osteopathic Principles and Practice at Lincoln
Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine
(LMU-DCOM), was the featured speaker for Claiborne County Hospital's
"Lunch and Learn" community outreach program on July 12, 2007.
Dr. Thompson's presentation, entitled
"An Introduction to Osteopathic Medicine" was well attended by
community members and CCH staff.
Osteopathic medicine is a "whole
person" approach to health care, where instead of focusing on only
treating specific symptoms, the physician concentrates on treating
the patient as a whole. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or "D.O.s,"
are required to complete the same about of training as medical
doctors, can specialize in a variety of medical areas, and must pass
examinations to obtain state licenses to practice.
Dr. Thompson was an osteopathic family
physician for almost 20 years in Maine prior to his appointment at
LUM-DCOM. He received his B.S. in biology from the University
of Southern Main and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from
the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Thompson is board certified by the American College of
Osteopathic Family Physicians and by the American Osteopathic Board
of Special Proficiency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
